John H. White won a Pulitzer: You Never Know Who You'll Meet
On April 2, 2010 I was walking down Michigan Ave. in front of the Apple Store. At the storefront sat a woman in a folding chair and a man across the sidewalk shooting a photo or two. Turns out that the woman wanted to be the first to buy an iPad upon its April 3rd release. Turns out the man with the camera was John H. White, Pulitzer prize winning photojournalist with the Sun Times.
I happened to speak to him only because I was wondering why he was photographing the woman, and because he was probably wondering why I was hovering nearby. I wasn’t really hovering, but stepped aside to send a text message. We stood and happily chatted for a few minutes. He asked me about my blogging, I asked him about the Sun Times. And he never did tell me he’d won a Pulitzer, though he did ask me what I thought of it. I’m a fan of photography and was admiring his Nikon. To that he said encouragingly, “It isn’t really the camera, it’s what’s in your heart that makes the best photos.” His Pulitzer Prize winning photo is below.
